Alaska Court System Clerkships: 2027-28 Deadlines, Pay and Locations

Short answer: Alaska hires about 15 Supreme Court clerks a year. Each of the five justices has three, and all Alaska clerkships are one-year terms starting in late August or early September (Alaska Court System). For 2027-28, Supreme Court and Court of Appeals applications were due Sept. 15, 2026. Superior Court applications are due Oct. 1, 2026 and Anchorage District Court Oct. 15, 2026 (Alaska Court System).

Fast facts
  • Courts: Supreme Court 5 justices x 3 clerks; Court of Appeals 4 judges x 2; Superior Court 45 judges, usually 1 each; Anchorage District Court 10 judges share 2 (Alaska Court System).
  • Pay (biweekly from July 1, 2026, Anchorage): Supreme Court $2,937.00; Court of Appeals $2,744.25; trial courts $2,564.25, with higher rates in many other communities (Alaska Court System). At 26 pay periods, that is about $76,362, $71,351 and $66,671 a year (our arithmetic).
  • Rural premium: Second District Superior Court clerks earned $3,427.50 to $4,003.50 biweekly in Nome, Utqiagvik and Kotzebue in 2026-27 (Second District posting).
  • Eligibility: an ABA-accredited JD by the start date; Alaska bar membership not required; work authorization without sponsorship (Alaska Court System).
  • Packet: letter of interest, resume, all law transcripts, an unedited writing sample and letters from professors or employers (Alaska Court System).
Rules to know
  • Clerks are at-will, sign an oath and cannot practice law in any Alaska court (Alaska Court System).
  • Superior Court judges may make offers before the Oct. 1 deadline (Alaska Court System), so apply early.
