I initially read on TLS that it doesn't matter, that numbers rule all, etc. But I'm going to err on caution and write one lmao

Anecdotal: I didn't write any in 2014 because I had 3.75 173 and I thought "numbers rule all". I got WL basically every where in T14. There were probably many issues with my packet, but I'm sure zero supplemental essays didn't help.

Sure. I mean I honestly don't really know what went wrong, so I'm assuming everything that could have gone wrong did. I was applying as a kjd with no real work experience/volunteering/etc. My PS was really bland. My LORs were just from professors who's classes I did well in. I didn't write any additional essays. I have a c&f which isn't too bad, but I don't think I focused enough on making it polished. I applied in late January, which isn't bad but didn't do me any favors

Looking back I was just generally the kid who gets good numbers and then figures they can rest on their laurels. I still got into Cornell with money (so this should be seen as some defense of numbers are most important), but decided I really didn't take the app cycle seriously and needed to mature a bit before going so I deferred.

We'll see how it goes this time around, but I needed to learn that there are more than enough people with good numbers and I definitely did.

We are pretty similar applicants to be honest. Thank you for that. It seems that of all the things you mentioned, the "bland" personal statement worked against you the most. I think adcomms take them pretty seriously and use it to set you apart from the next guy who has the same numbers lol. I think that since you seem to know what you did wrong, this cycle will work out pretty nicely for you. Best of luck

Checking in. I'm 30 with marginal work experience. 169/3.2 so pretty classic splitter. UVA isn't my first choice but not too far behind.

What kind of stats would an AA URM need to get scholarship money from UVA or is it too hard to predict? UVA is definitely my second choice.
