So I've seen conflicting accounts regarding whether or not Hyde Park is a safe area to live in. Granted, I'm not a big city kid - I grew up in rural Tennessee - so perhaps I'm just overhyping myself regarding safety in major US cities. Anyone have definitive knowledge on this topic?

I mean it's a city, don't be stupid and don't go to the wrong areas. Chicago's crime is mostly gangs and it's mostly on the South Side. Hyde Park is on the south side. We are a mile from the most dangerous block in the entire city. That being said, the neighborhood itself is fine (although it is a city so the general city rules apply, but they would apply anywhere else). I've never felt unsafe but I also wouldn't recommend riding the L here to anyone.

I've walked around Hyde Park alone at all hours without a sniff of a problem, and I think that's the experience of the majority. Shit happens, for sure, but it's not that common. This year I'm living several blocks south of school, which I'd been conditioned to think was a notch less safe than Mordor, were it built in a favela and run by Pol Pot, but I've had 0 problems. The L is also fine (better than fine if you fancy a contact-high) as long as you don't get off in the wrong neighborhood. The closest green line stop is a few blocks southwest of school, and although you won't mistake the neighborhood for suburban paradise, it's safe during the day, at least.

I don't say any of this to indicate that Hyde Park or the border area with Woodlawn or Washington Park is a problem free area, but rather to temper the fear mongering that one often hears.

To clarify: I've always felt fine in HP and walked alone at all hours of the night and morning. It's a city, so the general city understanding always has to said. I think (I can't cite any numbers and am too lazy to search) that NU's River North has a higher rate of crime than Hype Park and no one ever bashes River North.

Although I do hate the L. Admittedly, I'm biased after riding it for 5 years and seeing some of the craziest things I've ever seen.

0Ls: you'll be fine in HP. I know of many people who choose to stay their 2L/3L year and love it. Our professors live here. The current POTUS lives here. The best museum in Chicago lives here. You'll be fine, happy, and safe.

How hard is it to defer an acceptance to Chicago? I got in and really want to go but got hit with some horrible news and I think I need at least 6months to settle.

Just in case anyone panicked for a second, the Feb 15th deadline doesn't apply if you haven't been accepted.

"Need Access Form - February 15, 2015 (or, if you are admitted after February 1, two weeks after the date of your admission) - Parent Information Required for applicants age 28 or under."

FWIW, I was admitted the same day and received my acceptance letter/Uniquely UChicago in the mail last Friday. It was postmarked Feb. 2.

Recently got an e-mail congratulating me on my recent admission and providing a link to the admitted students website and financial aid information. The thing is, this is the first I've heard that I was admitted! I didn't get a call or a previous e-mail. Has this happened to anyone else?

Some people find acceptance emails in their spam folders, or in the "promotions" tab if you're using gmail.

On a less serious note... any avid fishermen or women out there who either currently do or plan to fish off the shore of Lake Michigan during the warmer months? According to Google Maps, the lake is about a 10 minute bike ride from the law building

Don't know about weekends, but from the spreadsheet it looks like decisions have gone out in just a couple big waves, and the last one just happened on 2/4. So far I think there's been about a 3 week interval between the waves. So, though I also interviewed this week and really would love to hear something this weekend, I would guess that it's going to be at least a couple weeks.

But, if anyone would like to tell me that I'm wrong, I'd be happy to hear it.

When was the last available date for interviews? You most likely won't hear back until the very end of the interview wave. Interviewed this week as well. The last day was Feb 26th and yea, if you also look at mylsn, it appears that they go out in three week waves. So we'll probably hear back Feb 26th or that following Monday.

Sorry to post this min-rant here as it only pertains to admitted students, but there's no Chicago C/O 2019 thread yet.

1. I realize the disastrous financial aid form that is NeedAccess probably takes FA offices a fair amount of time to process per applicant, but if your seat deposit deadline is in late April/early May, why make the financial aid application deadline in mid-February? Especially when there are a significant number of applicants the school will not even accept until after that deadline has already passed?

2. Why announce an already relatively early FA deadline date of Feb. 18th in admit e-mails and then send out another e-mail on Feb. 10th saying that "You must turn in the Need Access Application by no later than February 15, 2016" (UChicago bolded it in the message, not I)

Agreed, not just in reference to Chicago, but just about every school. When I called my parents at Harvard's request and asked them to file their taxes two months earlier than they normally would, they weren't exactly thrilled.

My parents don't look forward to my calls right now because of these financial aid deadlines.

I just figured out the discrepancy in the admit email v. the Feb 10 email. The Feb 15 deadline is for anyone admitted before Feb 1. For those of those admitted after Feb 1, we have 2 weeks from our admit date to submit all the finaid forms. That is why our acceptance emails on Feb 4 gave the Feb 18 deadline.

Avid outdoorsy person here, and the urban setting of U Chicago has been pretty much its only issue for me. It's amazing that the lake is that close!

I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one for whom that is a concern! I'd prefer to spend three years in a place where I can easily access the things I enjoy doing, but if I can't I'll just have to get used to fishing from the shoreline of a major city I suppose.
