Thanks for the responses. For IRS tax I interviewed back in September and was told someone would reach out in October. I was referred 2 weeks ago and received an email to notify me, so I was wondering if there was a delay or if I'm not being considered really.

I noticed my FERC status changed to referred at some point last week but haven't heard anything. Same with EPA

As for DOL, I applied directly and see that I was referred, but I haven't heard anything.

IRS - that tracks. IRS is unique in the honors apps are all dumped into an open bucket all the components, small business, procedures and administration, etc can pull from. So branch chiefs hand select interviewees. Moreover, because they do this, you can get interviews from multiple components and even multiple offers. Outside of the field offices, the IRS national office for OCC interviews this week and next week. Field offices do their own thing it seems.

DoL - worst interview experience in my opinion. It's one interview. It's been 14 months since my interview and they still haven't formally rejected me.

So there is no second round with DOL? Now I just wait till December(or even later) for the decision?

For the IRS field offices, would you know if some of them continue interviewing in the spring, or is hiring done in the Fall?

That's stressful about DOL. I've read in prior threads that they even interview before apps close, and I applied very close to the deadline. I'm afraid that's gonna play against my chances

When you applied shouldn’t matter for DOL, they can’t/won’t hire until after the deadline closes and they will continue to review people for interview slots until then as well. I interviewed with them in the past and applied right before the deadline.

It is a weird system that they hire off one interview though.

I am under the impression, however, that offers happen rather quickly. For example, my friend and I interviewed at the national office two weeks apart. I was first and they never called my references. He interviewed at the non tax component (read: ethics) and they contacted his references the following day and he received an offer but declined it approximately a week later.

To that end, IRS is very slow to reject candidates because they rank people. You could be second choice and get the offer if first choice rejected it or didn't survive the background check. Consequently, the "tell" that an offer is coming is your references get called.

More interesting is that I have heard ranked candidates have received offers months after the interview because someone has a chance of circumstances or backs out. This could account for spring interviewing as well.

The entire government hiring process sucks because it's never fully over and seemingly never feels like it even begins

DoL does rolling interviews but they don't decide anything until after things close. Also, I recall they didn't even extend offers until late December into February last year or the year before.

I had an interview over 2 weeks ago with representatives from 4 different field offices (I only applied to field offices, not to DC). Almost immediately after my interview, the head interviewer contacted one of my two references. That reference contacted me to let me know that he'd been contacted by IRS, and that he gave a glowing reference (which I have no reason to doubt).

However, my other reference, who is a non-IRS federal employee, has yet to be contacted. I have veterans' preference, for whatever that's worth, and I haven't heard anything since then. Thoughts? I'm getting nervous.

Well, I can say that they don't contact references they aren't at the very least strongly considering sending offers. They do not necessarily contact everyone, and from what I understand, they usually only contact former supervisors/managers etc. Lastly, I recall my friends who received offers had their references called very quickly but offers did not go out until all interviews were complete.

CFPB had not started interviews as of Tuesday, so I wouldn't lose much sleep on it

I’ve heard their honors attorney hiring is way down and they hired mostly appellate clerks or HYS grads last cycle, so I’m not holding my breath.

I have a very reliable source, that's all I can say.

They hired 4 people out of 250 apps last year. 50 made it through to referred to hiring manager and of that 20 interviewed.

I think they definitely favor clerks but that's most federal agencies in my opinion

That means that people that were referred to the hiring manager did well, and that if you make it to the interview stage, you had approximately a 40% chance of getting hired.
