I am not super familiar with the area, but my impression is that we're not going to have a good time trying to find a place to sit around and talk in the area - it always just seems so crowded. a stop or two north might be easier?

There are plenty of fine establishments a short Uber ride away that we could plan to get together at after the musical, especially in the River North area.

I am skipping because my uncle has a charity dinner/reception (plus its a chance to see my family). If I didn't know anybody in town I would definitely go though!

I think this is reasonable esp if you can get some face time with admissions during your visit and then reinforce that in your negotiation email.
