Canadian JD/MBA Student — Chances for NYC BigLaw?

Post by risk » Sun Jun 07, 2026 5:48 pm

Hi, I’m a Canadian law student who just finished 1L at Osgoode. I’m heading into the MBA portion of my JD/MBA next semester, which gives me some time until the next application cycle to prepare. This summer, I will be working as a legal intern with a police service (I know, it's not BigLaw-related).

1L grades (median is a B):
Fall: A, A, B+
Winter: A+, A+, A, A, A, B+

B+ grades were in Crim and Legal Writing. Overall average is an A (roughly top 15% or better).

My main goal is NYC BigLaw, and I’m trying to understand how realistic that is from my current position. I’d appreciate any candid thoughts from people familiar with U.S. transfers, Canadian law students moving into NYC, or BigLaw recruiting.
