I've heard from a few law students that buying used/renting is not a good idea for 1L year--will likely get marked up books that can be confusing to work with.

Renting means you can't mark up the book at all, may be a bit annoying depending how you take notes. I've never had problems buying used books, except where its an older edition.

Books came to $550 for the fall, but it splits it up into Fall/Winter/Spring.. Is it fair to project ~$1650 for the year?

I just bought mine through Amazon. Spent ~550 on all of them. I made sure to only buy from sellers with a lot of positive reviews.

Amazon has a decent report and return policy. It's still early enough that bad books can be returned. Plus, free shipping on "prime eligible" books with Amazon student!
