Weird everyone at my UG always said co-op, which to me makes more sense because it is short for "Harvard Cooperative Society." Thanks for the info!wealtheow wrote:It's definitely coop like chicken coop.Pneumonia wrote:Here is question: how do Harvard students pronounce "COOP," i.e. the place that you can purchase textbooks at? So on the orientation website checklist it says we need to go on to HELIOS and state our intent to enroll but I don't see anywhere to do that. Anyone know?

I didn't know that; have really only ever heard it said and never gave it much thought. The sharing with MIT thing makes much more sense now. I'm shooting for this weekend. The 2Ls are in the middle of EIP and the 3Ls are all on vacation in Europe, so a lot of them aren't available to list their books yet. Thankfully with Amazon's free 2-day delivery, you've all still got three weeks before you really need to order any books you can't get used.HorseThief wrote:I'm waiting for this before I get my books.TripTrip wrote:You can also buy used books from current students.

Also, this weekend is tax free in MA, so you can save 6.25% if you order books then....TripTrip wrote:I'm shooting for this weekend. I talked to them over the phone and they pronounced it like chicken coop. Back in UG (Texas), however, they pronounced it co-op, like Spec Ops. I don't think there's a right way.Pneumonia wrote:Here is question: how do Harvard students pronounce "COOP," i.e. the place that you can purchase textbooks at? Does anyone know how cable works in the dorms? I want more than basic channels. Do I have to go pick up a box from Comcast or anything to that effect?

Hmm, Amazon is charging me the sales tax if I ship it to MA (but not if I ship it to my family's house outside of MA). It's added up to be a pretty hefty amount already with books/bed/other stuff.TripTrip wrote:Every day is state sales-tax-free day if you order online.hop wrote: Also, this weekend is tax free in MA, so you can save 6.25% if you order books then....

Are you guys bringing/buying a printer, or just using the HLS library?

I bought a cheap reliable laser printer so I could print anything I needed to quickly.wtrc wrote:Are you guys bringing/buying a printer, or just using the HLS library?
But I'm also not living in the dorms, so it would be a walk for me to go to the library, and I print personal things at home all the time. I just find a printer to be very convenient.

MA had a big thing about it and passed a law, I think last year, requiring sales tax to be charged on internet purchases.wtrc wrote:Hmm, Amazon is charging me the sales tax if I ship it to MA (but not if I ship it to my family's house outside of MA). I'm not bringing a printer, but I figure I can pick one up for $10-$20 on the grad market if I need one.wtrc wrote:Are you guys bringing/buying a printer, or just using the HLS library?

Has anyone who previously couldn't get into Helios found a way to fix the problem? I e-mailed the registrar but no one ever got back to me.

I was thinking I'd spend 50 - 100 on a new printer along with a lot of other things I plan on buying for the new place. I won't be bringing a lot of my old electronics so this weekend I plan on buying and shipping a lot of stuff, including a printer.wtrc wrote:Are you guys bringing/buying a printer, or just using the HLS library?

Heads up that we get Microsoft Office for free, so don't buy it like I almost did.

What do you guys think about renting used books? Any significant drawbacks you could see? Buying or renting new is way too expensive.
