Do judges write rec letters or take calls?

I’m wondering how common it is Joe judges to serve as references for their clerks after the clerkship. Is it common for them to write Rex letters or serve as a reference? Or is that frowned upon? I’m wondering whether I should ask my judge or if it’s better to just have the line on my resume.

Is this even a question? In my chambers, it was assumed that we could list Judge as a reference on anything we wanted, and he would gladly make calls for us if we asked. Have you asked your judge? I know asking this may be more difficult in some chambers than in others, but still, that strikes me as a totally appropriate and standard ask if you've done a good job during your clerkship.
