So I was going to mail some apps to some judges, and I have been told to use UPS or Fedex. That is at least $20 a pop, which can quickly turn out to be a lot. Is it a real problem if I use USPS Priority Mail? That seems to be considerably cheaper.

So NOT necessary to use UPS or FedEx (not meant to sound cranky at you, I just don't know why anyone would give you this kind of advice). Priority mail with delivery confirmation is fine. If you're really paranoid, you could spring for signature confirmation or certified mail, which is still totally unnecessary, but much cheaper than UPS or FedEx. (My judge actually hated to see FedExed applications, since he didn't have a deadline listed anywhere and he thought it was a huge waste of money.)

Sent all of mine USPS (about a hundred). Worked out fine - seemed to get there about a week or so after I mailed them.

Also, I believe Judge Bauer (7th Cir.) tells you in his OSCAR profile to not waste the money on UPS or Fed Ex, so Nony's judge is not alone.

I do USPS First class. $1.40-1.60 per apps.

I sent out about 100 and had no problem. Ended up with plenty of interviews and an offer so I think it was ok.

Why do schools keep perpetuating this myth then?! It's annoying as hell.

TLS Conventional Wisdom is to NOT listen to your school or Career Services, but use your common sense and do your own research.

I'm going to agree with everyone and say USPS is the way to go. I mailed out about 100 to judge's for a 1L internship this summer and I can't even imagine paying $20 a pop. I ended up hearing back with rejections, interviews or holds from almost every judge so I don't think it was a problem.
