Which judges in CA2/SDNY/EDNY look or are more receptive to top students outside the T14?

I graduated tied for 1 in my class at a T40 and am geographically limited due to personal circumstances. Targeting 2028/2029 and working in generic biglaw before

Calabresi sometimes hires the top student at a lower ranked school (see, e.g., Judge Sooknanan).

Do you have any ties to any of the non-NYC regions in CA2 (CT, VT, NDNY/WDNY)? Some CA2 judges like hiring from schools in their region (e.g., Nardini hires from UConn).

Or, do you have any professors with ties to any CA2 judges?

Appreciate the reply. From NYC suburbs but no real ties to CT (other than fond memories of visiting museums in New Haven a few times). Sadly no profs who I am close with clerked on CA2 or have many ties to judges there that I know of (one had ties to a judge there but said I wouldn't be an ideological fit)

Any movement from Walker or Sullivan (CA2), Cronan, Engelmayer or Karas (SDNY), Kovner or Komitee (EDNY)?

Furman, Oetken, Engelmayer, Subramanian have all made offers and had them accepted. Not sure if any (or all) are done.

How would people evaluate the experience of clerking for a senior SDNY judge, both in terms of quality of clerkship and quality of credential? I'm thinking specifically about Stein, Kaplan, Cote, Preska and Castel.

There’s no real functional difference in terms of prestige between a senior SDNY judge and a non-feeder active SDNY judge. Most of the seniors take a full criminal caseload and half the civil caseload minus some of the routine buckets of case like state habeas, social security appeals, etc. I’m not sure if Stein is still “on the wheel” (takes new cases) but he’s great. And by having a lighter docket you’ll have an easier clerkship and more free time.

their clerks seemed pretty miserable when I was last around them

He has fired at least 1 clerk in the last 12 months. Not sure anything has changed.
