In case any students or newer grads encounter this, please look beyond the Wikipedia page/AFJ “reports,” or think more critically about how to read them. Some people might sound ideologically misaligned when they’re not, and you can be misled to believe that someone’s MORE aligned with you than they are. Some judges might be more hawkish about managing their reputations online than others, so that pollutes the signal, too.

This take is egregious. She just seems to have worked at a pretty normal firm (as in not a nonprofit litigation shop or state SG office that specializes in advancing a cause you oppose) for 3 decades, and “defend” and “allegations” mean hardly anything.

I clerked after working as a PD, so I certainly value fit and am happy with how things worked out. That has not universally been the case for friends who worked for judges one might assume to be liberal, or even progressive.

I actually do think it's appropriate to write off a judge who *twice* defended individuals in power against sexual harassment allegations, defended a school district against racism, and donated money to a notoriously corrupt politician whose reputation has been known for decades. Sure, she could be a lovely boss, but if that's not indicative of character, I don't know what is.

But if it matters to you, then one relevant clarification to consider might be that it’s probably not just “*twice*” (lol), if this was the practice she was in.

Wouldn’t design my career around someone else’s Wikipedia is my point.

The Wikipedia page spotlighting those cases is really weird. She was a labor and employment specialist. She surely defended dozens, maybe hundreds, of cases involving allegations of sex- or race-based misconduct. Along with wage and hour regulation, that is the bread and butter of employment litigation. And every civil litigator has most likely defended at least a couple of discrimination related cases at some point; there are just a ton of them, to the point that they're now treated as an insurable routine cost of doing business.

Good reputation. Delaware connections help (former VC and SCODE Justice) but I don’t think they are essential.

If you search back in the thread there’s some info. E.g., “Bibas is extremely grade picky. You can't have more than 1 B+ on your transcript. He hires SCOTUS-quality candidates.” Can’t speak to whether that holds true but I would expect so.

Clerked on CA3 for a different DE-based judge, had friends who clerked for her. Got the sense that she was a kind and highly-involved boss who was interested in mentorship. Generally found her sharp and plus to sit with even when we did not see eye to eye on substantive issues. She was getting her sea legs when I was there (and you could tell a bit) but think fair to assume that's in the past now. Strong Delaware connections if that's the exit you want, otherwise don't think she has a lot of juice. Follows the Ambro tradition of a liberal business-type litigator. No red flags to my mind.

All I know is I am within the top 2% after 1L year--school won't disclose more than that. Though I did learn that Bibas hired someone from my school who graduated in the top 5% of their class.
