I was under the impression that the first day would be the day where you should dress smartly, so I actually had to go buy an outfit for it because I didn't have anything I thought would suffice. There's no way I can just let it languish in my closet now...

I'll be biz casual for day one (for the facebook/Wildcard photo) and hopefully just casual thereafter. The only thing on the schedule where attire is specified is the cocktail reception on Thursday evening (biz casual).

People were casual/business casual throughout, although looking smart for the first day is wise. If you don't look sloppy you won't be out of place.

Ugh, whyyyyyyy? I don't have more than 2 days of business casual! If I can't wear jeans, golf shorts or cargo pants, my wardrobe only covers about 3 outfits!

Getting a pair of khakis might be useful. Or chinos or something. But yeah, suits are a bda idea for orientation.

Rink, when DAT LOAN SKRILLA comes through, we can do a basics shop. A pair of khakis, a pair of wool dress pants, and some shells/shirts will get you really far. nobody will notice if you wear your pants multiple times.

There was an old couple sitting at a table up by the library looking like they were just busying themselves. Definitely looked like someone brought their parents and the parents were just hanging out killing time.

-H&M (across water tower) I'd def hit this up first-cheapest but still presentable.
-Zara (on Michigan ave a few blocks down) I prefer this over H&M for knit tops.
-Banana Republic (also Michigan Ave but FWIW the Chicago Premium Outlets in Aurora have a Banana, Club Monaco, Benetton and Calvin Klein...if you find a friend willing to drive there ) I get emails for when Banana has 30-40% off online and can let you know
-Macys (in Water Tower)
-Nordstrom as suggested by franklyscarlet. Nordstrom is the priciest of this list but will have the most variety in size and shape for a better fit. There's also Nordstrom Rack down Chicago-toward Chick fil A.

Also venture into places like Wicker Park/Bucktown for boutique-y stuff! Don't stay in Streeterville all the time...Streeterville pretty much sucks, and won't give you a good sense of life in Chicago as a whole.

And I will reiterate this one final time...you really don't need to dress up. It's school, not a law firm. Dress in a way that makes you feel comfortable. People who dress up too much are funny.
