I'm thinking about living downtown

The self evident nature of Downtown's undesirable features does not require detailing. Especially because all I have is anecdotal evidence. My anecdotal evidence for what it is worth: I worked down there for 5 years at two different locations. One of them was a night job. Downtown IS NOT a decent place to live. If you were eccentric, gay, or liked artsy "scenes" I could understand wanting to live there with the relative vibrancy of those communities, but nothing is stopping you from driving in for that.

I was thinking about it but I doubt i will be doing it. If it is not on the tests it probably is not super helpful, IMO.

I think the last few posts have been too hard on downtown. It certainly CAN be a sweet place to live. unfortunately on a law student's budget, you're unlikely to find a spot that will be suitable

Actually, the Phoenix rental market is starting to become oversaturated, so there are good deals to be had in practically all of Phoenix and surrounding areas (including downtown)

yeah, I might read a couple of the books on the list, but I won't stress out if I don't get them done. However, I am currently reading Getting to Maybe (I don't think it's on the list) because I heard it was helpful...

Does anyone know anything about the Mesa/Chandler area? When I visited the school, a few of the people from the admissions office recommended that I search there for a place to live.

I'm in Tennessee right now, so finding a place to live is going to be tough. Any help/suggestions on areas to look would be appreciated!

Put simply, Mesa and Chandler are inexpensive, family-oriented, and very suburban. Lots of identical-looking housing developments. Mesa is older, heavily Mormon, but also has some rough areas.

Unfortunately, the ghettos seem to be scattered randomly, so it's hard to know whether you're in a nice neighborhood or not without checking it out in person.
If you find a place that you're really interested in, send me a pm and I might stop by and make sure the lawn isn't littered with used syringes.

As long as you stay below Arizon Ave (aka Country Club) you will be fine if you decide to live in Chandler. The really bad areas seem to be around Broadway and Arizona Ave to Chandler and Arizona Ave. I live in Chandler, and commuted during my undergrad to ASU. The commute wasn't too bad, and the housing is realtively inexspensive. Besides apartments, there are lots of homes to rent in the area as well.

I received mine via e-mail yesterday... just registered online too! If you didn't receive yours, then perhaps we're in different sections... FYI, they also released the winners of the parking lot "lottery"... I wasn't among them; gonna have to schlep it to class .

I just looked at the parking lottery list and I wasn't on it either I'm looking at available parking and it looks like the closest is the Tyler parking structure...but I'm nervous about buying it.

oh, there's still a some Rural parking permits even if you didn't win the parking lottery...so you may still be able to buy one online if you hurry.
