That's one reason why I'm living on campus next year. I'll also be re-locating across the country so the cost coupled with my lack of knowledge regarding the area etc. made me want to choose schools with on-campus living situations. If you're not opposed to living in an on campus apartment it's a great option.

Not at all.
I'm attending a SoCal school and they're granting me $1280/year for housing . . . when I can't find a place to live under $1000. Which leaves me only $80/year for all utilities! Which is absurd. I would suggest on-campus housing, but, unfortunately, my school doesn't offer it.
I'm calling the FinAid people tomorrow.

Get a 2 bedroom or 3 bedroom and you'll be just fine. Unfort., the money they give you is calculated ONLY for the 9 months you are attending with roomies it should become a non issue.
